The Clean Energy Council is the peak body for the clean energy industry in Australia.
They are a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation. They represent and work with Australia’s leading renewable energy and energy storage businesses, as well as rooftop solar installers, to further the development of clean energy in Australia.
Accreditation with the Clean Energy Council recognises people who have undertaken the necessary training to design and install solar, batteries and other renewable energy systems.
CEC-accredited installers and designers aim to work to industry best practice standards, producing systems that are safe, reliable and meet customer expectations.
Installers can apply for different types of accreditation to reflect the various work and responsibilities that can be encountered in the industry.
Below is a list of all the types of accreditation CEC offers, to help you decide on the type of accreditation that is most suitable to you. The relevant accreditation must be held for government rebate eligibility.
Types of CEC Accreditation:
Accredited individuals with this accreditation can work on solar systems connected to the grid.
Grid-connect Design Only
This accreditation is for individuals who want to design solar systems that are connected to the grid.
Grid-connect Install Only
This accreditation is for individuals who want to install solar systems that are connected to the grid. You must hold an unrestricted electrical license to qualify for this accreditation.
Grid-connect Design and Install
This accreditation is for individuals who want to do both the design and installation of solar systems that are connected to the grid. You must hold an unrestricted electrical license to qualify for this accreditation.
Battery Storage accreditation
This accreditation is for individuals who want to design and/or install battery storage systems that are connected to the grid.
Grid-connect Battery Storage Design Only
This accreditation is for individuals who want to design battery storage systems that are connected to the grid.
Grid-connect Battery Storage Install Only
This accreditation is for individuals who want to install battery storage systems that are connected to the grid. You must hold an unrestricted electrical license to qualify for this accreditation.
Grid-connect Battery Storage Design and Install
This accreditation is for individuals who want to do both the design and installation of battery storage systems that are connected to the grid. You must hold an unrestricted electrical license to qualify for this accreditation.
Being CEC accredited is a valuable credential that shows that you have the skills and knowledge necessary to design and install solar and battery storage systems safely and reliably. CEC accredited installers and designers are also eligible to apply for government rebates, which can make solar and battery storage more affordable for their customers.

STEP 1: COMPLETE THE TRAINING
First, you will need to complete the relevant training units required for the type of accreditation you would like to apply for.
STEP 2: APPLY FOR PROVISIONAL ACCREDITATION
Once you have completed your training, you can apply to become accredited. To do this you will need to submit copies of your:
Note: You will not receive an accreditation number at this point as you will still need to complete the online assessments outlined in step 3.
STEP 3: COMPLETE THE ONLINE ASSESSMENTS
To demonstrate your knowledge you have 30 days to complete the assigned online assessments.
Once the online assessments have been successfully completed you will receive your accreditation number and can begin working as a CEC-accredited designer or installer.
If you have applied for design only accreditation, you have now completed your required assessments. You don’t need to complete a practical assessment and can go to step 5.
STEP 4: COMPLETE A PRACTICAL INSTALLATION ASSESSMENT
If you hold Design and Install or Install Only provisional accreditation, you must complete a practical assessment before your three-month provisional accreditation expires. This is to demonstrate competency in installing solar or battery systems and will require you to submit documentation showing one of your first solar and/or battery installations.
Information on these practical assessments will be available to you once you apply for CEC accreditation.
STEP 5: UPGRADE TO FULL ACCREDITATION
If you hold Design Only provisional accreditation, once you have successfully completed your online assessments, you can submit your upgrade application and payment to become fully accredited.
If you hold Design and Install or Install Only provisional accreditation, once you have completed your online and practical assessments, submit your practical assessment documents, upgrade application and payment to become fully accredited. Your practical assessment will be sent to our technical team to review. Once it is approved you will become fully accredited.
The upgrade application is available once you apply for your CEC Accreditation.
STEP 6: MOVE TO ANNUAL RENEWAL
Your full accreditation lasts for one year and will need to be renewed annually, via continuous professional development. In order to renew you will be required to complete 100 points of eligible training, which is split into two categories, Core and Elective. This is to ensure that installers stay up-to-date with industry changes and have the knowledge they need to comply with all necessary standards.
STEP 7: ADD ADDITIONAL ACCREDITATION
Once you’ve got your full accreditation, if you want to design or install other types of systems, you can add these to your accreditation. Find out more about types of additional accreditation.
When you add new accreditation types you will be provisionally accredited for a three-month period and will need to complete the associated assessments for that accreditation.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN):
In order to complete this course you need to have a certain level of language and literacy skills.
We recommend that you have at least level 3 skills for this course.
This Course involves two units of study:
UEERE0054 Conduct site survey for grid-connected photovoltaic and battery storage systems
UEERE0060Design grid-connected battery storage systems
UEERE0077Install, maintain and fault find battery storage systems for grid-connected photovoltaic systems
UEERE0078 Install, maintain and fault find battery storage systems for grid-connected photovoltaic systems
PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT
The approach to the delivery of this course is one of flexibility and self pace.
Designed for clients who do not have the time to attend lengthy face-to-face courses or personnel who are unable to travel long distances to attend training centres.
All theory will be completed online and two practical assessments will be completed in a workplace either of your choosing (with a registered solar installer) or provided by Staysafe Industry Trainings extensive database of certified installers.
PREREQUISITES
An unrestricted electrical licence issued by an Australian state or territory is a prerequisite for enrolment in this course. Electrical apprentices may enrol in this course, however they will need to wait till until they are issued their unrestricted licence before being awarded a Statement of Attainment OR show they have completed the prerequisite Units of Competency in their studies already:
One of:
UEEEL0039 Design, install and verify compliance and functionality of general electrical installations
UEERE0051 Apply electrical principles to renewable energy design
UEEEL0012 Install low voltage wiring, appliances, switchgear and associated accessories
This course builds on the knowledge of the Grid-Connected PV Systems Design and Install course, so a prerequisite for enrolment is a Statement of Attainment in the following Unit of Competency:
UEERE0061: Design grid-connected photovoltaic power supply systems
If a student does not have a Statement of Attainment in UEERE0061 but does have a Statement of Attainment in any of the following superseded Units of Competency, they will be enrolled in gap assessment for UEERE0061 at no additional cost:
UEENEEK135A: Design grid connected photovoltaic power supply systems
UEENEEK035C: Design grid connected power supply systems
