Who is this course for?

Subcontractors in the general trades for example;

  • carpentry
  • glazier
  • tiling
  • concrete
  • scaffolding
  • landscaping

And all Individuals or businesses must be licensed as building contractors, including subcontractors if they run a business that carries out or organises building work:

  • for others
  • to sell or let land or buildings.

Please note: Sole traders normally apply for a contractor's licence and building work supervisor registration at the same time as both are required to contract work.

Gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become a licensed contractor for a variety of building work, including additions, alterations, and residential building construction.

Expand your expertise to meet the National Construction Code Class 1 & 10 standards, and even gain the ability to construct and install transportable buildings.

Apply for your trade contractors licence with our Consumer Business Services (CBS) approved course

To successfully complete this course, you must complete six (6) nationally accredited units of competency:

BSBESB402 – Establish legal and risk management requirements of new business ventures

BSBESB401 – Research and develop business plans

CPCCBC4007 – Plan building or construction work

CPCCBC4004 – Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects

CPCCBC4003 – Select, prepare, and administer a construction contract

CPCCBC4024 – Resolve business disputes

Upon completing all or some of these units, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units you have successfully completed.

What This Licence Allows You To Do

A Building Work Contractor’s Licence allows you to:

Legally contract with clients to carry out building work in South Australia.

Operate as a sole trader, partnership, or company offering building services.

Employ or subcontract other licensed builders, tradespeople, and apprentices.

Take on residential, commercial, or industrial building projects, depending on the conditions or classes listed on your licence.

🛠️ Types of Work You Can Undertake

The licence covers many classes of building work, including:

General building work (construction, renovation, extension)

Carpentry and joinery

Roofing, bricklaying, concreting, plastering

Bathroom/kitchen renovations

Swimming pool construction

Structural landscaping

Earthmoving and site preparation

Steel fabrication and installation

Specialist trades (like waterproofing, tiling, fencing)

Note: You must be licensed in each class of work you want to contract for.

🧭 Pathways After Getting the Licence

Once you’re licensed, here are advanced study or career directions available:

🧱 Trade to Builder Progression

If you’re a qualified tradie (e.g., carpenter), you can complete CPC40120 Cert IV and apply for a Builder – Limited class licence, then progress to open or unrestricted builder roles.

🏗️ Site Supervisor or Project Manager

Study Diploma of Building and Construction or Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying to work in site management or compliance.

👷‍♂️ Building Inspector / Surveyor

Pathway: Diploma → Advanced Diploma → University degree (e.g., Bachelor of Building Surveying).

🧑‍💼 Construction Business Owner

Business qualifications like Cert IV in Small Business Management or Diploma of Leadership & Management help run a scalable company.

🌱 Green Building / Sustainable Design

Optional further study in sustainable construction, energy efficiency, or solar and battery design (e.g., Grid-Connect PV).
