Applying for Your Electrical Trade Contractor Licence in QLD?
QBCC Electrical Trade Contractor Licence – QBP Overview
To apply for your QBCC Electrical Trade Contractor Licence, one of the key requirements is completing the Qualified Business Person (QBP) component. This is where most applicants begin, especially those wanting to run or grow an electrical contracting business. The QBP qualification demonstrates that you understand the business side of electrical contracting, ensuring you can operate legally, manage clients, handle contracts, reduce risk, and comply with QBCC licensing rules.
What Is the QBP?
The QBP (Qualified Business Person) qualification proves you understand how to run an electrical business properly and legally. It covers compliance, operations, financial responsibilities, risk management, and customer obligations. It is designed to make sure you can manage the business—not just the technical work.
What You Learn in the QBP Course
The QBP course teaches essential business skills for contractors, including:
-
Legal obligations for running a trade business
Understanding contracts, quoting laws, consumer rights, and compliance requirements. -
Risk management
Identifying risks, maintaining site safety, and protecting your business legally and financially. -
Business planning and operations
Developing business plans, understanding business structures, and managing day-to-day operations. -
Financial basics
Invoicing, job costing, cashflow, GST obligations, and managing business expenses. -
Managing clients and contracts
Avoiding disputes, setting expectations, and managing variations effectively.
Outcomes of Completing the QBP Course
Once you complete the QBP qualification, you will be able to:
-
Apply to QBCC as the Qualified Business Person
-
Legally run or manage an electrical contracting business
-
Ensure all business decisions comply with QBCC rules
-
Understand the financial and legal responsibilities of being a contractor
-
Avoid common business mistakes that lead to disputes or licence suspension
-
Oversee quoting, contracts, invoicing, compliance, and risk management with confidence
Essentially, the QBP ensures you can run the business properly—not just perform the electrical work.
Where the QTP Fits In
In addition to the QBP requirement, every electrical contracting business must also nominate a QTP (Qualified Technical Person). The QTP is someone who holds a current Electrical Work Licence – Electrical Mechanic. They are responsible for ensuring all electrical work is completed safely, legally, and to industry standards. You can nominate yourself if you hold the licence, or you can nominate another qualified electrician.
QTP & QBP Combined
Both requirements are essential for an Electrical Trade Contractor Licence:
-
QTP (Qualified Technical Person): Shows you have the technical trade skills (Electrical Mechanic licence).
-
QBP (Qualified Business Person): Shows you have the business skills (QBCC-approved business unit or qualification).
Together, they ensure your business meets both technical and business standards required by the QBCC
