Visual Playground Inspections—also known as Routine Inspections—are the most frequent and frontline safety checks conducted on playgrounds. According to AS 4685.0:2021, these inspections should occur daily to weekly, depending on site use, environmental conditions, and organisational policies. Their purpose is to quickly identify immediate and obvious hazards that could compromise user safety.

Visual Inspections form the foundation of a strong playground safety program. They are simple, efficient, and designed to pick up issues that require urgent attention or further assessment during higher-level inspections.

Focus Areas of a Visual (Routine) Inspection

A Visual Inspection typically includes observations such as:

  • Obvious Damage or Breakage
Spotting cracked components, missing parts, vandalism, or visible structural issues.

  • Surface Hazards
Identifying displaced loose-fill surfacing, compacted landing zones, exposed concrete or footings, and slip hazards.

  • Foreign or Dangerous Objects
Checking for litter, hazardous debris, syringes, glass, rocks, or animal waste that could injure users.

  • Obvious Wear and Tear
Detecting visible deterioration, fraying ropes, worn swing seats, or rust in easily observable areas.

  • Entrapment and Snagging Risks
Watching for protruding bolts, sharp edges, broken connectors, or openings created by vandalism or equipment movement.

  • General Site Condition
Observing issues such as flooding, erosion, vegetation encroachment, graffiti, or obstructed access areas.

Why Visual Inspections Matter

Routine Visual Inspections are the first line of defence in playground safety. They help organisations:

  • Detect urgent hazards before a child uses the equipment

  • Reduce risk and liability by demonstrating active monitoring

  • Maintain clean, functional, and welcoming play environments

  • Support ongoing compliance with Australian Standards

By equipping staff with the right skills, your Visual Inspection Course ensures that hazards are identified early and appropriately escalated before they lead to accidents.
